Tolerance is NOT enough.

Today we met with Dr. Pamela King and her Alabama history class at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. We talked a lot about all of the things that happened during the civil rights movement but how much there is still to be done. There is still racism and segregation in our nation, it is just not mandated by law but is still in practice. Last winterim I took a class through the university also, FED 385 (Foundations of Education) Social Foundations: Human Relations. We talked about how a lot of people move from ignorance to tolerance through education. Should we be satisfied with just tolerance? According to dictionary.com; to tolerate is to to allow the existence, presence, practice, or act of without prohibition or hindrance; permit or to endure without repugnance; put up with. Is that okay to just put up with people who are different? NO. It is NOT. We need to move past tolerance to acceptance and activism before things will begin to change.

"Each person must live their life as a model for others" ~Rosa Parks.
