Journal 3 - Day 3

Montgomery, AL 10:13P.M. Day 3
I woke up at 8:30 A.M. this morning; I wasn’t too tired and was looking forward to today’s trip. We finished the movie, and it was a good one that totally reflected how American loves to help people out no matter what their race, age, size, and talent. One thing I was impressed by the movie was that Big Mike wasn’t been told off by “Mom” after the car crash; in vice versa, she tried to comfort him and not even yell at him. If she were my mom, I would get be in big trouble. Isn’t it cultural difference?
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church - Birmingham, AL
Four girls were killed in 1963
After a while, we arrived at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Four girls were killed in the basement of the church on September 15, 1963, when the KKK gang bombed the church without warning. It was the center of life for Birmingham’s African American Community in the past. It was organized in 1873 as the first Colored Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama. Because of the segregation, the church and other black churches in Birmingham served for many purposes, It functioned as a meeting place, social center and lecture hall for a variety of activities important to the lives of the city’s black citizens. We watched a documentary video in the main hall and historical photos in the basement of the church. After the church, I had lunch at Yeh Manh which is a Jamaica food restaurant, the food there was really good, but I think the curry chicken with rice was a little salty.
Rosa Park Museum and Library - Montgomery, AL
Bus Video in Rosa Park Museum
After lunch, we headed to Rosa Parks Museum where is located in Troy University, Montgomery, AL. I was impressed by the bus video. Rosa Park was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man at that moment, since it was like a time machine which brought us back to December 1, 1955. The information was in detail, I also amazed by their own-made transportation car pool system. Without a well-planning, civil right movement will not be succeeded. After finished the museum, we had a down town tour. Dinner was taken place in Dreamland BBQ, the ultimate combo plate was delicious, and so that I could try everything a little bit. We also had group discussion in hotel conference room, it was an amazing chance to share/ learn from each other for the day. I think it is the best part of the day. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s trip!

  1. I thought the degree of organization involved in making up and dispatching the 350+ cars involved in the carpool was phenomenal.
