We got up bright and early today to go to church. When we got there the first thought that came into my mind was how beautiful the church was. When we got inside it was not just beautiful but everyone was so friendly. . When mass started the choir started to sing. It is hard to describe the feeling I got when I heard them singing, I kept getting goose bumps and I just wanted to get up there and sign with them. When the priest gave his sermon he had us all laughing and he really made me think about what he was saying. One of the things that the he said will stick with me for a long time; he said “purpose is inherently offensive”. By that he meant that when someone has a purpose to do something in life they will always have “haters” going after them. People do not like when someone does good with their lives or does better than them. This is quite funny because people want us to make a difference, have a purpose with our lives, but when we do others get mad at us. His sermon was pretty much how we shouldn’t let others bring us down not matter what.Going to a Baptist service was a thought provoking experience; it gave me a real feeling of the south and how much the church means to them. After that we got to go the King Center and we got to read about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and got a real feeling of what he did to help bring equality for everyone. The King Center was a really wonderful Historical site because I feel that when we learn about him in history books they do not really tell us much on everything he did. After having a lunch break and driving for two hours we went to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. It is hard to describe the emotions a person gets when they are walking through the institute. It is really wonderfully set up, in the scene that it really does take you to the history of the whole movement from the segregation of public facilities to how they overcame that to problems we are struggling with right now.
After having an eye opening experience we got to go to the golden corral and got to sit with awesome new people to discuss the trip and life. Somehow we ended up talking about our worst teachers in middle school. Today was a great day, I cannot wait till tomorrow!!! :-)
