Trip honored with an award!

News release from our recent NASPA Award:
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Civil Rights Pilgrimage was honored by a national organization in November. The program was selected by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators as its outstanding program of the region for the year.
"I was so honored to receive the NASPA Region IV East Celebration to Diversity Award for the Civil Rights Pilgrimage on behalf of our wonderful students and staff who created this program," said Beth Hellwig, vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. "I received numerous comments of congratulations from colleagues from around the region and requests for more information."
The Civil Rights Pilgrimage gives UW-Eau Claire students the opportunity to visit sites of historic importance to the U.S. civil rights movement during their winter or spring breaks.
There have been several pilgrimages from UW-Eau Claire with the latest departing during Winterim. Some stops on the pilgrimages have been the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta; the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Ala.; the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Ala.; the Community Bakery and Central High School in Little Rock, Ark.; and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn.
Student coordinators also play an important role in making the pilgrimage possible. Senior Sarah Gonzalez helped plan the pilgrimage since its conception in the spring of 2007. Gonzalez said that it feels great to have this trip recognized by the award because the organizers put so much effort into keeping it a success.
“There aren't too many alternative breaks or short-term immersion experiences that are open to everyone here at UW-Eau Claire, so I am proud to be a part of one, especially because I know that the trip always leaves a really strong impact on those who experience it.”
Congratulations to the trip organizers for their well deserved recognition! Thanks for all of your hard work!
