Suggestions to get more out of the trip:
1. There is a facebook page available for those who are interested in how the story of Civil Rights continues today, and how the gains of the sixties are threatened in several states. Add Civil Rights Pilgrimaage(sic) to your groups on facebook to follow some of them that are pertinent to this blog.
2. If you have time in the next week, take a look at the travel and tourism sites for Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, New Orleans, Little Rock, and Memphis so you have some idea of what to expect in each location. Visit the websites for the King Center in Atlanta, the Montgomery capital, the Confederate White House, and the National Civil Rights Museum, for example, to get a flavor of what is there.
3. Comfortable Shoes and clothing. Nothing worse than getting blisters on the third day from your shoes.
4. Prepare good questions for the people in the places you will meet as we go. Many are dying to talk to someone about an aspect of the past that they don't get to talk about to the quick tourists. Show some interest and understanding.
5. Be ready to be friendly and open to new experience.

I am in Towers South anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 111 fellow travelers, and I am so excited for the trip we are about to have. I was born in 1968, the year that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, and my mother's memories of that time are still vivid. I am now 43, 4 years older than MLK Jr. was when he was shot -- and it is amazing to me to think about what he was able to accomplish in what to me feels like such a short life. Would that I could make a fraction of the difference!
